Kano Launches Diphtheria Vaccination Campaign in Five LGAs

The Kano State Government has commenced a diphtheria immunisation campaign across five Local Government Areas (LGAs) as part of efforts to curb the spread of the disease.

The exercise is being conducted in Dala, Fagge, Gwale, Kumbotso and Ungoggo LGAs, covering 13 selected wards.

The Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) said the affected wards include Gobirawa, Kofar Ruwa, Kwachiri, Rijiyar Lemo, Dorayi, Kabuga, Chiranchi, Naibawa, Fanshekara, Bachirawa, Gayawa, Rijiyar Zaki and Ungoggo.

In a statement signed by the State Risk Communication and Community Engagement Officer, Rukayya Jafar Suleiman, residents whose vaccination status is unknown or who received their last diphtheria vaccine dose more than 10 years ago were urged to visit designated vaccination centres.

The health authorities described the vaccine as safe and effective, stressing that immunisation remains an important measure for protecting individuals and communities from serious illness caused by diphtheria.

Parents and other residents were also encouraged to ensure that their family members participate in the exercise and to obtain accurate information from health authorities.

The state government had earlier appealed to the Federal Government in August 2026 for additional diphtheria vaccines to enable a wider mass vaccination campaign across Kano.

The request followed reports of a diphtheria outbreak in Rano and some other LGAs. The Kano State House of Assembly had reported that more than 50 children died in the outbreak, although the state government disputed the reported death toll.
