Argentine President Condemns UN Over Falklands Conflict

Argentina’s President Javier Milei has criticised the United Nations, describing it as a “useless organisation” over what he said was its failure to address Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands.

Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, Milei accused the UN of failing to fulfil its responsibilities in maintaining collective security and protecting human rights.

He said the organisation had instead allowed “chaos, violence and international terrorism” to grow and accused UN officials of ignoring Argentina’s longstanding claim to the Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina.

The Falkland Islands are a British overseas territory claimed by Argentina. The two countries fought a war over the islands in 1982.

Milei also accused Britain of disregarding a UN resolution calling on both sides to refrain from unilateral actions concerning the disputed territory.

His comments came as Argentina and the United States announced a joint initiative aimed at improving Argentina’s infrastructure and strengthening connections between key economic sectors and major Atlantic ports and Western markets.

The initiative, known as the Andes-Atlantic Corridor, is expected to focus on transport, digital infrastructure, minerals and energy, including development around Argentina’s Vaca Muerta hydrocarbon formation.

The Falklands dispute has remained a longstanding source of tension between Argentina and the United Kingdom. Britain continues to administer the islands, while Argentina maintains its sovereignty claim.
