The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested four men over the alleged killing of a 45-year-old farmer, Garba Abdullahi, who was reportedly accused of causing the illness of a resident.
The suspects were identified as Shitu Dahiru, 25; Magaji Dahiru, 42; Sabi’u Auwalu, 20; and Abbah Abdulzahar, 19.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, the incident occurred in Dunari Village, Atahowa District, Bauchi State, while Abdullahi was returning from his farm.
Habib said the suspects allegedly attacked the farmer at about 11:40 a.m., accusing him of being responsible for the illness of one Sawaida Dahiru.
He said the four men allegedly stabbed and macheted Abdullahi on different parts of his body, leaving him unconscious.
Following a report made by the victim’s younger brother at the Gadau Divisional Police Headquarters, police officers rushed to the scene and took Abdullahi to the General Hospital, Azare, for medical treatment.
However, the farmer was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor, while his body was released to his relatives for burial.
The police spokesman said all four suspects had been arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation and prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the killing and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
He also expressed concern over what he described as increasing cases of jungle justice and self-help based on superstitious beliefs, stressing that nobody has the right to take another person's life under any circumstances.
The police command urged residents to provide credible information to security agencies and assured the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property.
