Yobe Residents Question Governor Buni’s N300m Donation to Izala University

Yobe State residents and activists have criticised Governor Mai Mala Buni over his reported N300 million donation toward the proposed Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) University.

Critics argued that the money could instead have been used to address urgent problems in education and healthcare, including dilapidated schools, the large number of out-of-school children and inadequate medical facilities.

However, the Yobe State Government denied that public funds were involved. The governor’s Director-General of Press and Media Affairs, Mamman Mohammed, said the N300 million was Buni’s personal donation, not a contribution from the Yobe State Government.

The government also clarified that Kabiru Masari announced the donation on behalf of Governor Buni at a JIBWIS seminar in Jos, alongside his own personal contribution.

The controversy has therefore centred on whether the donation was appropriate given Yobe’s development challenges, while the state government maintains that no state government funds were used.
