US Sanctions ICC President, Senior Lawyer Over Court Investigations

The United States has imposed sanctions on International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye, escalating the Trump administration’s pressure on the Hague-based court.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the two officials were sanctioned for their involvement in ICC efforts to investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute officials from countries that have not accepted the court’s jurisdiction.

The sanctions were imposed under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump last year. They freeze any US assets belonging to the affected individuals and restrict their access to the US financial system.

Washington has previously sanctioned other ICC officials, citing the court’s arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as its investigation into alleged crimes involving US troops in Afghanistan.

The United States is not a member of the ICC. However, the court maintains that it can exercise jurisdiction over certain crimes committed in the territory of member states, including cases involving nationals of countries that are not members.

The latest sanctions further deepen tensions between Washington and the ICC, as the Trump administration continues efforts to challenge the court’s investigations and operations.
