Heavy Rain Triggers Landslide, Hospital Collapses in Calabar

A hospital in Calabar, Cross River State, has partially collapsed following a landslide triggered by persistent heavy rainfall.

The incident occurred on Thursday around Duke Town Drive/Anansa Road in the Big Qua Town/Marina area, where the landslide undermined parts of the building.

The affected facility, known as UNICEM Clinic, was established to provide healthcare services to workers and residents associated with the United Cement Company of Nigeria.

The Cross River State Government described the incident as a “serious natural disaster” that has persisted in the area for about two weeks. Commissioner for Information Ekpenyong Cobham said the landslide also affected other buildings in the area.

He added that no deaths had been reported as of Saturday, while the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) were working with the state government to assess the damage and assist affected residents.

The incident has renewed concerns over recurring landslides and erosion in parts of Cross River, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
