President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene in the deteriorating conditions of the Benin–Agbor–Asaba road and the Ifaki–Kabba–Ado Ekiti road, following severe disruptions and prolonged delays experienced by motorists.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, expressed concern over the condition of the roads and the hardship faced by commuters, some of whom have reportedly spent hours or even days stranded on the affected routes.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Francis Nwaze, spokesperson to the Minister, Umahi said President Tinubu had ordered immediate corrective action to restore movement on the roads.
> “President Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible.”
Intervention Begins in Ekiti and Kogi
In response to the directive, Umahi instructed the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, to lead a team of ministry officials to the Ifaki–Kabba–Ado Ekiti axis.
The team was already on the ground by 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, to assess the situation and begin urgent remedial work.
Umahi Heads to Benin
Meanwhile, Umahi travelled to Benin City, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees to coordinate an intervention on the Benin–Agbor–Asaba corridor.
The meeting is expected to involve representatives of the Edo and Delta State Governments as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
The stakeholders are expected to work together on immediate measures to ease the difficulties faced by motorists along the strategic route.
Minister Apologises to Stranded Motorists
Umahi also accepted responsibility for the situation and apologised to commuters who have experienced prolonged delays or become stranded on the affected roads.
He assured motorists that the Federal Government's response would not be limited to temporary measures, saying immediate relief efforts would be combined with long-term solutions aimed at restoring and improving the roads.
The Federal Government said it remains committed to taking urgent corrective action while pursuing permanent solutions to prevent a recurrence of the crisis.
