Three members of a Palestinian-British family have drowned after entering the sea near Shoreham Fort in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, according to the Palestinian Embassy in London.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when four family members went swimming. Police, paramedics, coastguard teams and a lifeboat were called to the scene after the group got into difficulty in the water.
The victims were identified as Palestinian refugee Hossam al-Khawas, a woman and a teenage girl. All three were pronounced dead after being pulled from the sea.
A younger girl was rescued and taken to hospital in critical condition.
The Palestinian diplomatic mission said it was in contact with British authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and monitor the condition of the surviving girl.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the incident as a “terrible family tragedy” and expressed his condolences to the victims’ relatives and friends.
The incident comes amid a wider rise in drownings across parts of Europe during the ongoing heatwave, with authorities warning that open-water swimming can be dangerous because of cold-water shock, strong currents and sudden changes in water depth.
