Police in Thailand say the 14-year-old boy accused of carrying out a deadly shooting at a school outside Bangkok had previously watched violent content online and used social media to learn about firearms.
According to police, the teenager had shown an interest in firearms for about one to two years. Authorities also discovered that a teacher had confiscated a BB gun from him after he brought it to school last year.
The shooting, which occurred on Friday, left several people dead and more than 20 others injured. Police said the teenager had allegedly killed his grandparents at home before going to the school, where he fatally shot six more people before taking his own life.
Deputy Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 1, Atthapol Anusit, said investigators had interviewed 17 witnesses and recovered a firearm, spent cartridges, a knife and a personal computer from locations connected to the incident.
Police said an examination of the teenager's computer showed that he had viewed social media content involving violence. However, investigators have not found evidence that he had previously practised shooting.
The teenager had reportedly lived with his grandparents for 12 years following the separation of his parents.
In response to the tragedy, Thailand's Ministry of Education said it would introduce new school safety measures over the next three months. The measures are expected to include mental health screening, referrals for students considered at risk, emergency response drills, stronger anti-bullying programmes and improved measures to prevent weapons and other dangerous items from being brought into schools.
The shooting has renewed debate over gun control and school safety in Thailand, which has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia.
