The Zamfara State Police Command has rescued two abducted persons, killed an armed bandit and recovered an AK-47 rifle during a security operation in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of the state.
The command disclosed this on Tuesday in a statement issued by its spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar.
The operation was conducted on Sunday at about 2:30 p.m. by a joint team comprising police tactical operatives, members of the Community Protection Guard and the Civilian Joint Task Force.
According to the police, the security team was conducting a rescue operation along Tashar Lawali Village in the Kagara District of Talata Mafara when it encountered a group of armed bandits travelling on five motorcycles with abducted victims.
The suspects reportedly opened fire after sighting the security operatives. The team responded with superior firepower, forcing the bandits to retreat.
One of the bandits was killed during the gunfight, while an AK-47 rifle and its magazine were recovered from him.
The police also confirmed that two abducted victims were rescued, while other members of the gang fled into the surrounding area with injuries.
“No casualties were recorded among the joint security forces,” the command said.
The police said the operation was still ongoing, with security personnel intensifying efforts to track the fleeing suspects, rescue additional victims and recover more weapons.
The Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Bello, commended the joint security team for its courage, resilience and swift response.
He assured residents that the command would continue to carry out intelligence-led and coordinated operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring peace across the state.
