Iran and Oman have resumed discussions on managing shipping through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz as diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington remain stalled.
The two countries said they discussed establishing a temporary navigation corridor through the strait and agreed to clear the waterway of mines. The route is particularly important because the Strait of Hormuz previously carried about one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.
Most shipping through the waterway has been suspended since the conflict began in February. Despite a reduction in direct fighting between the United States and Iran, tensions remain high and passage through the strait continues to pose risks.
An oil tanker was reportedly hit by an unidentified projectile on Tuesday and disabled about 17 kilometres northeast of Ash Shishah in Oman, near the entrance to the strait.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Secret Service said it was aware of an Iranian state television broadcast discussing an alleged plot against U.S. President Donald Trump's youngest son, Barron Trump. The broadcast claimed a $10 million bounty had been offered for his killing, though the report did not establish that such a plot was genuine.
The United States has also begun returning some diplomatic personnel to Middle Eastern missions that were evacuated or reduced during the conflict. The move indicates Washington believes the immediate risk of further escalation may have declined, although some diplomatic missions will initially operate with reduced staff.
Washington has continued to pressure Iran economically, threatening countries that maintain business ties with Tehran with possible U.S. sanctions. Iran has condemned the pressure campaign as unlawful and said it believes many countries will refuse to participate.
Oil prices fell for a second consecutive day as traders appeared to discount the potential impact of the new sanctions.
The conflict has caused thousands of deaths, particularly in Iran and Lebanon, while U.S. and Israeli military operations have significantly weakened Iran's conventional military capabilities. The current condition of Iran's nuclear programme remains uncertain.
