Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has denied reports of ongoing communication between her brother and US President Donald Trump, saying she was unaware of any such talks.
Her comments came after Trump said he had been in contact with Kim and that the North Korean leader had responded positively to his proposal for renewed discussions.
Trump also said he planned to meet Kim, describing their relationship as one of mutual understanding and respect.
However, Kim Yo Jong maintained that the United States continues to pursue what Pyongyang considers a hostile policy towards North Korea.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have recently drawn renewed attention after Trump ordered a significant reduction in joint US-South Korean military exercises. The US maintains about 28,500 troops in South Korea.
Trump has expressed frustration with Seoul over its refusal to support US military operations against Iran, while also questioning the value of some long-standing US alliances.
The latest developments revive memories of Trump’s previous engagement with Kim. The two leaders held historic meetings in Singapore in 2018 and Vietnam in 2019, followed by Trump’s brief crossing into North Korea at the Demilitarized Zone.
Despite those meetings, North Korea has continued expanding its nuclear and missile programmes and strengthened military ties with Russia.
