Israel’s military has announced criminal investigations into the deaths of 5-year-old Hind Rajab and her family and 15 Palestinian paramedics in Gaza.
The probes mark the first criminal investigations announced by the Israeli military into troop conduct during the Gaza war. The cases involve two incidents that generated widespread international condemnation.
Hind Rajab was trapped in a vehicle with members of her family after they were killed in February 2024. She reportedly pleaded for help by phone before she was also killed.
In another case, 15 Palestinian paramedics were killed in March 2025. Their bodies were later bulldozed into a mass grave, according to reports.
The Israeli military said it had reviewed 150 incidents involving the conduct of its forces in Gaza and made decisions on five cases. However, it said it would not launch criminal investigations into three other attacks that killed aid workers from World Central Kitchen and Doctors Without Borders.
World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés criticised the decision, describing it as “wrong and painful.”
Israel says its military and legal systems are capable of addressing alleged misconduct by soldiers. Human rights organisations, however, argue that Israeli forces have rarely been held accountable for alleged violations.
The Israeli military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 73,000 people, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Israel rejects allegations of genocide and war crimes, saying it is targeting Hamas and accusing the group of operating among civilians.
