Tension gripped Osogbo on Wednesday after suspected hoodlums engaged security operatives attached to the convoy of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, in a gun battle at the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji.
The incident occurred shortly after Adeleke received his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and visited the traditional ruler to celebrate his electoral victory.
According to sources at the palace, the suspected hoodlums had reportedly gathered near the area in an unregistered Toyota Sienna before the governor’s arrival.
Witnesses said an argument broke out among some individuals outside the palace before gunshots were heard. The motive for the confrontation and the intended target remained unclear.
A shop owner near the palace, Laide Misture, said the shooting began shortly after the governor and his entourage entered the palace.
She said the gunmen fired from near the main gate, prompting the governor’s security personnel to respond.
The exchange of gunfire reportedly lasted about three minutes before the hoodlums fled in their vehicle.
Confirming the incident, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, said suspected hoodlums were involved.
He, however, said authorities had yet to establish what triggered the shooting or identify the groups involved in the initial altercation.
> “It is true there were gunshots when we were exiting the palace and the governor’s security team had to go and engage them,” Alimi said.
He added that officials only heard that an altercation had occurred between different groups outside the palace, but the circumstances surrounding it remained unknown.
