NDLEA Arrests India-Bound Businessman With Cocaine, Seizes ₦3.6bn Worth of Drugs

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 48-year-old businessman, Nwankwo Onyebuchi, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos with 1.55kg of cocaine allegedly concealed inside his luggage.

The suspect, who deals in marble in Lagos, was arrested while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight to New Delhi, India.

According to the NDLEA, the cocaine was factory-fitted into the walls and railings of his luggage. The suspect reportedly confessed that he sold his marble business and other assets to raise ₦23 million to purchase the consignment, which he hoped to sell in India for up to ₦100 million.

In separate operations across Lagos and other states, NDLEA operatives recovered large quantities of codeine syrup, cannabis, tramadol, cocaine, methamphetamine and other controlled substances, with the total value of the seized drugs running into billions of naira.

The agency said it also arrested several suspects in Kwara, Oyo, Delta, Plateau, Kano and Edo states as part of its ongoing operations against illicit drug trafficking.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers and personnel for their efforts in disrupting the supply and distribution of illicit drugs across the country.
