Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has been declared the winner of the August 15 governorship election after securing victory in 19 of the state’s 30 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
The State Returning Officer, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, announced the final results at about 7:24 a.m. on Sunday.
Adeleke, who contested under the Accord Party, polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 444,815 votes and won in 11 LGAs.
The result means Adeleke has been returned to office for another term as governor of Osun State.
Adeleke won in Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Iwo, Egbedore, Ife North, Ife East, Ife Central, Oriade, Ifelodun, Orolu, Ayedaade, Ayedire, Odo Otin, Boluwaduro, Ilesa West, Ifedayo, Osogbo and other declared areas.
Oyebamiji, meanwhile, won in Irewole, Isokan, Olorunda, Atakumosa East, Atakumosa West, Ilesa East, Boripe, Irepodun and Obokun.
According to the Returning Officer, 1,010,684 voters were accredited, while the total votes cast stood at 1,005,800. There were 985,079 valid votes and 207 rejected votes, according to the figures announced.
After the political parties’ agents signed the results, Professor Ogunwole formally declared Adeleke the winner.
He said Adeleke had satisfied the requirements of the law and was therefore declared the winner of the August 15 governorship election.
The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Najeem Salaam, finished third in the election.
