Most Democrats in Key 2028 Primary States Oppose US Aid to Israel, Poll Finds

A new opinion poll has found that most Democratic voters in six US states expected to play a major role in the 2028 presidential primaries oppose providing military aid and weapons to Israel.

The survey, conducted by YouGov for the IMEU Policy Project, found strong opposition to US military support for Israel among Democratic voters in South Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan and Virginia.

The six states are expected to hold the first Democratic primary contests in the 2028 presidential election and could significantly influence the selection of the party's presidential candidate.

In Michigan, 80 percent of respondents said they believe Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The figure rose to 91 percent among voters under the age of 45.

In South Carolina, where Democrats are scheduled to hold the first primary contest, 52 percent of respondents said they oppose US arms sales to Israel. Only 2 percent said they supported military assistance to Israel.

The poll also showed considerable support across the six states for sanctions against Israel and for enforcing an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hamid Bendaas of the IMEU Policy Project said the findings indicate that support for Israel among Democratic voters has fallen sharply. He argued that Democratic presidential candidates could face growing pressure to adopt policies that reflect changing views among the party's voters.

The survey comes as divisions over US policy toward Israel continue to grow within the Democratic Party. In July, more than 100 Democratic members of the House of Representatives voted to block weapons transfers to Israel.

The issue could become increasingly important in the 2028 Democratic presidential primaries, particularly as progressive candidates critical of Israel have gained support in several congressional races.

Although the 2028 presidential election remains more than a year away, the poll suggests that the Israel-Gaza conflict could become a major issue in the Democratic nomination contest and potentially influence the party's foreign policy platform.
