A magnitude 5 earthquake struck the southern Spanish city of Granada early Saturday, damaging houses and vehicles, although authorities reported no deaths or serious injuries.
The earthquake hit the Alhendín metropolitan area shortly after 1 a.m. local time. Television footage showed debris scattered across streets and several cars damaged by falling materials.
Emergency services rescued several people from buildings affected by the quake, while authorities assessed the extent of the damage.
Andalusia’s senior emergency official, Antonio Sanz, said there was no serious structural damage and confirmed that Granada’s historic Alhambra Palace was not affected.
“There is no serious structural damage, no serious material damage and there are no casualties,” Sanz said.
The Alhambra, one of Spain’s most important examples of Islamic architecture and a major tourist attraction, remained safe following the earthquake.
