Funeral services were held on Saturday in Alice Springs, Australia, for five-year-old Indigenous girl Kumanjayi Little Baby, whose death in April shocked the country and triggered violent clashes in the remote town.
Hundreds of mourners gathered at Alice Springs Garden Cemetery to pay their final respects. Many attendees wore the girl’s favourite colour, pink, while her flower-covered coffin was transported to the cemetery in a black hearse.
The child’s death and the subsequent arrest of a suspect sparked unrest in Alice Springs, a town of about 25,000 people located roughly 1,250 kilometres south of Darwin, the Northern Territory capital.
Since her death, the local Indigenous community has observed “sorry business,” a traditional mourning period involving cultural practices following the death of an Indigenous person.
About one-fifth of Alice Springs’ population is Indigenous, with thousands of Indigenous residents living in camps on the outskirts of the town. Many of these communities face inadequate housing and limited access to essential services.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese previously called on authorities to improve living conditions in the camps following the girl’s death.
A 47-year-old man, Jefferson Lewis, has been charged with the girl’s murder and two other offences. Details of the additional charges have not been publicly disclosed for legal reasons.
The funeral marked a solemn moment for the girl’s family and the wider Alice Springs community as mourners gathered to honour her memory.
