A powerful magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province on Saturday morning, killing at least 51 people and injuring more than 100 others, authorities said.
Around 5,000 people have been evacuated as the earthquake triggered landslides, blocked roads and damaged more than 1,300 homes. At least 36 people suffered serious injuries, while 77 others sustained minor injuries.
More than 3,300 residents in Sikka either evacuated themselves or sought shelter at a sports arena. Many residents were afraid to return to their homes and spent the night outdoors in tents or on porches.
Rescue teams have reached areas of Maumere that were initially cut off by landslides. Authorities said some people were still believed to be trapped beneath rubble, although there was no immediate confirmed number of missing people.
The earthquake was followed by about 341 aftershocks, according to authorities.
More than 3,500 military and police personnel have been deployed to assist with rescue and relief operations. Twenty petrol stations were also forced to shut down because of power outages.
The East Nusa Tenggara government is considering declaring a provincial emergency, which would allow authorities to mobilise additional resources and funding.
Indonesia lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active regions, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequently occur.
