A powerful explosion tore through a munitions factory near Colleferro, southeast of Rome, on Thursday, sending a blast that was heard several kilometres away.
Firefighters and police were already at the facility responding to a fire when the explosion occurred.
Colleferro Mayor Giulio Calamita said the situation was under control and that authorities were awaiting confirmation that there were no casualties or injuries.
The explosion occurred at a plant operated by KNDS Ammo Italy, part of the Franco-German defence group KNDS. The company manufactures medium- and large-calibre ammunition for land and naval defence systems, as well as solid propellants used in aerospace launch vehicles.
Calamita said the factory was closed for the summer holidays when the incident occurred, adding that the timing may have prevented a much more serious tragedy. Emergency crews were working to extinguish the remaining fires.
Television footage showed a huge plume of smoke rising above the industrial site as emergency services responded.
