Tragedy has struck Ihima community in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State after four members of the same family reportedly died following the consumption of Amala, a local cassava-flour delicacy.
The incident has raised concerns among residents, particularly after reports emerged that the family’s dog also died after eating the same food, prompting suspicions of possible food contamination or poisoning.
Reacting to the incident on Saturday, the Kogi State Government ordered an immediate investigation to determine the cause of the deaths.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo had directed the Commissioner for Health to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
Fanwo said authorities would examine whether the food consumed by the victims was contaminated or whether another medical or environmental factor was responsible.
He added that relevant samples and other available evidence would be properly examined in accordance with public health procedures. The Ministry of Health is also expected to work with relevant agencies and stakeholders during the investigation.
The reported death of the family dog after consuming the same meal will also be considered as part of the investigation.
The government urged residents to remain calm and avoid drawing conclusions about the cause of the deaths until the investigation is completed and verified facts are established.
Governor Ododo, according to Fanwo, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and the people of Ihima, assuring residents that further information would be released once the facts are confirmed.
