A humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor has reportedly completed the 100-metre race in 9.32 seconds, beating the men’s world record set by Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt.
The robot, named Lightning, reached a top speed of 14.5 metres per second during a preparatory event ahead of the second World Humanoid Robot Games, which opened in Beijing on Saturday.
Bolt’s human world record of 9.58 seconds was set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.
China has been promoting humanoid robots as a strategic emerging industry, with companies and policymakers hoping that advances in artificial intelligence and robotics will accelerate their use in manufacturing, logistics and consumer applications.
Lightning also won a 21-kilometre Beijing half marathon in April, finishing in 50 minutes and 26 seconds.
The robot was initially 169 centimetres tall, with legs measuring 95 centimetres. Researchers later lengthened its legs to 1.05 metres in preparation for the World Humanoid Robot Games.
