France to Speed Up Air Defence Deliveries to Ukraine

France has agreed to accelerate the delivery of new military equipment and missiles to Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said after a lengthy phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday.

Zelenskiy said Macron also offered to help Ukraine obtain additional U.S.-made Patriot interceptor missiles from countries that have them in stock. Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to its allies for more air-defence systems as Russia intensifies its missile and drone attacks.

The Patriot system is considered crucial for Ukraine because it is capable of intercepting high-speed ballistic missiles. Ukraine is also awaiting the delivery of the new Franco-Italian SAMP/T-NG missile defence system.

According to Zelenskiy, France has agreed to speed up the delivery of the latest French defence equipment and missiles. He also thanked Macron for France's readiness to grant Ukraine licences to produce certain missiles domestically.

Macron said he expressed his “horror and deep emotion” over a recent Russian drone strike on a crowded shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, which killed at least 16 people and injured about 130 others.

The French president said Russia's attacks on civilians were aimed at creating fear and escalating the conflict.

The two leaders also discussed ongoing peace negotiations and communication with the United States. Zelenskiy said they agreed on steps that could create additional diplomatic opportunities.

Macron, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are expected to co-chair a meeting of the pro-Ukraine “Coalition of the Willing” on Monday, with Zelenskiy also scheduled to participate.
