A retired officer of the Department of State Services (DSS), Ihechimere Ezeakolam, has been remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre after being arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The defendant appeared before Justice Muhammed Umar on four counts, including allegedly supporting IPOB, joining the banned group, and using social media to promote its activities. Ezeakolam pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Following his plea, the prosecution requested that the court remand him in custody pending trial. Justice Umar granted the request, adjourning the case until October 29, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
According to the prosecution, Ezeakolam allegedly provided moral support to IPOB between 2025 and 2026 by disseminating messages in support of the group through the internet and his social media platforms.
He is also accused of joining the proscribed organisation in Abia State and knowingly posting content designed to encourage public support for IPOB, offences said to violate the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
A fourth charge alleges that he published online messages intended to advance the activities of IPOB, contrary to the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended.
The court ordered that the retired DSS officer remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre until the trial begins.
