Nigeria and Burundi have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening military cooperation as part of efforts to tackle terrorism, violent extremism, and other cross-border security threats across Africa.
Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, made this known while receiving Burundi's Ambassador to Nigeria, Edouard Nduwimana, during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Shaibu described both countries as long-standing partners united by shared African values and a common commitment to peace and security. He pledged that the Nigerian Army would expand cooperation through military training, personnel exchange programmes, institutional capacity development, and strategic exposure visits.
He stressed that closer collaboration in military education, intelligence sharing, and operational experience remains vital to addressing terrorism and emerging regional security challenges. The Army Chief also commended Burundi for its progress in promoting peace, stability, and national reconciliation.
In his remarks, Ambassador Nduwimana conveyed greetings from Burundi's President, General Évariste Ndayishimiye, and praised the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and significant contributions to regional peace and counter-terrorism operations.
The ambassador called for increased access for Burundian military personnel to Nigerian military institutions through scholarships, specialized training, instructor exchange programmes, joint military exercises, and peace support operations.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepening defence cooperation and strengthening Africa's collective response to evolving security threats.
