Germany has officially delivered the INS Drakon, the largest submarine ever built in Germany since the Second World War, to the Israeli Navy. The vessel was constructed by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and is reported to be the most expensive submarine ever acquired by Israel, with an estimated cost of €550 million ($634 million).
The submarine was originally scheduled for delivery in 2025 but was delayed after Israel requested major design changes and technological upgrades.
According to reports, the INS Drakon is more than 70 meters long, weighs over 2,000 tonnes, and is equipped with an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, allowing it to remain submerged for extended periods without surfacing. It can also carry a larger crew and a wider range of military equipment and weapons.
The submarine is the sixth supplied to Israel by German shipbuilder TKMS and forms part of Israel's efforts to modernize its naval fleet.
Israel is also expected to receive three additional Dakar-class submarines beginning in 2031, with deliveries planned every 18 months. The €3 billion agreement for the new submarines was signed in 2022, with the German government expected to fund about 20% of the contract.
The submarine program is expected to remain a key pillar of defense cooperation between Germany and Israel in the coming decades.
