Health workers battling the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have staged protests over months of unpaid salaries, raising concerns that the response to the deadly virus could be further weakened.
Dozens of frontline medical workers in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, demonstrated outside the provincial governor's office, saying they have not received their wages and risk allowances since the outbreak began in May.
The strike comes as the Ebola outbreak continues to worsen. According to the latest government figures, the DRC has recorded 3,973 confirmed Ebola cases, including 1,801 deaths, making it the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded after the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic.
Health authorities say nearly 90 percent of all reported cases are concentrated in Ituri Province. While hundreds of patients remain in isolation, officials are concerned that many new infections are emerging outside known contact-tracing networks, particularly in remote communities affected by armed conflict and mining activities.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged the Congolese government to improve support for frontline health workers, stressing that their welfare is critical to controlling the outbreak.
Meanwhile, medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, warned that the virus is spreading at an "alarming and unprecedented rate." The organisation called for faster and more effective interventions, saying delays in reaching affected communities are allowing Ebola to continue spreading.
Health experts have emphasized that resolving the welfare concerns of healthcare workers and strengthening emergency response efforts are essential to containing the outbreak and preventing further loss of life.
