Nigerian Correctional Service Removes Ibara Prison Officials After Death Row Inmate's TikTok Live

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has removed the Officer-in-Charge of the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, along with two other senior officers, after a death row inmate allegedly used a mobile phone to host a TikTok livestream from inside the facility.

The inmate, Elijah Oyebode, was sentenced to death by hanging in 2019 after an Osun State High Court convicted him of the murder of Rofiat Adebisi, a final-year student of Osun State University. Court records show that Oyebode gave conflicting statements during the investigation before denying involvement at trial. However, the court found him guilty based on medical and other evidence.

Authorities said Oyebode allegedly remained active on TikTok while on death row. One of the accounts linked to him reportedly reached Level 20 gifting status, enabling him to receive monetary gifts during livestreams. Investigators also alleged that he operated another account used to impersonate a TikTok content creator and activist.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections JN Osuji, the Service described the incident as a serious breach of prison security and a violation of correctional regulations.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that the inmate unlawfully possessed a prohibited mobile phone, which he allegedly used to access social media while in custody. The device has since been recovered during a search operation and secured as evidence for the ongoing investigation.

The NCoS also confirmed that the inmate has been transferred to another custodial facility where he is being held under stricter security measures while investigations continue.

The Service stated that the Officer-in-Charge of the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre and two other principal officers have been relieved of their duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
