Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has received the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, and called on him to reform the state police command, improve public confidence and ensure fairness in policing.
Zungura, who assumed office on Monday, pledged to work with the state government to promote peace and stability. He also promised that the police command would remain impartial in addressing security challenges.
Adeleke said tensions remained in the state following the August 15 governorship election. He raised concerns over a recent police operation in Ikire in which two people were reportedly killed and called for disciplinary action against the divisional police officer allegedly linked to the incident.
The governor presented five major demands, including rebuilding trust in the police, improving cooperation between the state government and the command, reviewing allegedly compromised police units, ensuring the police participate fully in State Security Council meetings, and releasing members of the Accord Party whom he described as political detainees.
Adeleke also appealed for an end to what he called politically motivated arrests and assured the new police leadership that his administration would support police operations without political conditions.
The governor, who secured a second term in the August 15 election, urged all political actors to work together to restore peace and rebuild confidence in the state’s security institutions.
