Rising fuel prices and prolonged electricity shortages are forcing many Yemenis to adopt dangerous alternative energy sources, resulting in a growing number of fatal fires and serious injuries.
A recent explosion in the city of Taiz, caused by a lithium battery connected to a home solar power system, killed a mother and two children, while their father remains in intensive care. Health officials say battery-related fires have become increasingly common as more households depend on solar energy in the absence of a functioning public power grid.
Doctors at Al-Thawra General Hospital reported thousands of burn cases in the first half of the year, with many linked to exploding solar batteries, unsafe cooking gas installations, and fuel-related accidents.
The sharp increase in petrol prices has also prompted many drivers to convert their vehicles to run on cooking gas, a cheaper but far more hazardous alternative. Authorities warn that these unregulated modifications have contributed to a rise in vehicle fires and explosions.
Experts stress that solar energy itself is safe when properly installed. However, poor-quality batteries, improper installation, and unsafe storage practices have turned many household systems into fire hazards.
Officials and environmental advocates are urging greater public awareness, stricter safety standards, and the use of qualified technicians to ensure solar power remains a safe and reliable solution for Yemen's ongoing energy crisis.
