A Sudanese court has sentenced Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as Hemedti, and 15 others to death in absentia over the killing of West Darfur Governor Khamis Abbakar and crimes committed during the conflict in Darfur.
The ruling, delivered by a court in Port Sudan on Sunday, marks the first conviction of senior RSF leaders since fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group in April 2023.
According to state media, the court found Dagalo and the other defendants guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and attacks on civilians and public facilities. Those convicted include Dagalo's brother and deputy, Abdelrahim Hamdan Dagalo, along with several RSF officers and allied tribal leaders.
The case stems from the June 2023 killing of West Darfur Governor Khamis Abbakar, who was murdered hours after publicly accusing the RSF and allied militias of targeting civilians in Al Geneina.
The court said it would forward the case to Sudan's Supreme Court for review and seek the arrest and extradition of those convicted through Interpol and other international channels.
The RSF has consistently denied accusations of genocide and other war crimes.
The conflict between the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF began after disagreements over integrating the paramilitary force into the national army. The war has since killed tens of thousands of people, displaced more than 11 million, and created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, according to the United Nations.
