Fresh Benue, Plateau Attacks Leave 27 Dead

At least 27 people have been killed in separate attacks on communities in Benue and Plateau states, prompting renewed calls for stronger security measures.

In Benue State, 18 people were killed in attacks on Akpachi village and Otukpo-Nobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area. The violence began on Friday when two farmers were killed on their farmland, followed by another attack early Sunday that claimed 16 more lives and left several others injured.

The attacks sparked protests in Otukpo, where angry youths marched with the bodies of victims to demand urgent action from the government and security agencies. Major roads were blocked during the demonstration, causing disruptions across the town.

Otukpo Local Government Chairman Maxwell Ogiri confirmed the attacks and said authorities were relocating survivors, providing medical care, and strengthening security in the affected communities.

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings, describing them as barbaric. He directed security agencies to intensify surveillance, work with neighbouring states, and ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.

In Plateau State, gunmen attacked Kum and Wereng-Camp communities in Riyom Local Government Area late Saturday night, killing nine members of the same family, including a two-month-old baby. The village head was also seriously injured during the assault.

Residents said the attackers operated for more than an hour, forcing many people to flee into nearby bushes. Community leaders have urged the federal and Plateau State governments to improve security in vulnerable areas as many residents remain displaced and fearful of further attacks.
