US Lifts Restrictions on Anthropic's Advanced AI Models

The United States government has lifted export restrictions on Anthropic's advanced AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, allowing the company to restore access to users outside the US.

Anthropic announced that the US Department of Commerce removed the export controls after the company agreed to strengthen security measures, cooperate with the government on AI safety standards, and report malicious use of its models.

The restrictions were introduced last month over unspecified national security concerns, with officials reportedly worried about potential vulnerabilities in the models. Anthropic had temporarily blocked access for foreign users, including some of its own employees.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the decision, saying Anthropic no longer requires an export licence after meeting the government's security requirements.

Industry experts say the move signals a shift in the US government's approach to regulating advanced AI. They also note that it raises broader questions about whether future frontier AI models from companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI will require government approval before public release.
