The United States has launched a series of military airstrikes against Iran in response to alleged attacks on commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, CENTCOM said the operation was aimed at imposing "heavy costs" on Iran after accusing Tehran of targeting three commercial ships in one of the world's busiest shipping routes.
The U.S. military described the alleged attacks as "unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire," adding that the strikes were intended to protect international maritime security and deter further aggression.
Iranian media reported that at least six projectiles struck the Taheroui Pier area in Sirik, southern Iran. However, Iranian authorities did not immediately provide details on casualties or the extent of the damage.
U.S. officials did not disclose the specific military targets hit during the operation.
The latest strikes mark the first known direct U.S. military action against Iran since the exchange of attacks between the two countries late last month, signaling a renewed escalation in tensions.
The situation remains fluid, with international observers closely monitoring developments amid concerns that the conflict could further destabilize the Middle East and disrupt global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
