Three female worshippers who were abducted during an attack on an ECWA Church in Omugo, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have regained their freedom after spending 105 days in captivity.
The women were rescued on Monday by a joint security team made up of personnel from the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and local vigilantes.
The victims were among eight worshippers kidnapped by armed men who stormed the church during a Sunday service on March 22, 2026. Their release brings an end to a prolonged ordeal that left the Omugo community in grief and uncertainty.
President of the Omugo Development Union, Prince Oladimeji Ladi Thompson, confirmed the development, expressing joy over the safe return of the three women while mourning the five worshippers who died in captivity.
He described the rescue as a moment of relief for the community but said the loss of the five victims would never be forgotten. Thompson extended condolences to the bereaved families and thanked security agencies, traditional rulers, and members of the community for their support throughout the crisis.
According to reports, the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦1 billion before reducing the amount during negotiations. Residents reportedly raised about ₦20 million and provided food items and other supplies requested by the abductors, but five of the captives, including the wife of the church's minister, died before the remaining victims were rescued.
Community leaders have urged displaced residents to return home, assuring them that security measures have been strengthened to protect lives and property while calling for continued unity and support for rebuilding the community.
