United States authorities have charged alleged Indian crime leader Lawrence Bishnoi in connection with the 2023 assassination of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, a killing that triggered a major diplomatic dispute between Canada and India.
The charges were announced as part of a large international law enforcement operation involving agencies from the United States, Canada, and Europe. Authorities said 37 people linked to three transnational Indian crime syndicates have been charged with offences including murder, kidnapping, extortion, firearms trafficking, drug trafficking, and racketeering.
According to US prosecutors, Bishnoi and his associate, Satinderjeet Singh, allegedly coordinated the killing of Nijjar, who was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in British Columbia, where he served as president. Bishnoi is currently in custody, while Singh remains at large.
Officials alleged that the Bishnoi criminal network targeted religious, political, and community leaders for financial gain and maintained links with corrupt officials in India to intimidate rivals and obstruct investigations.
Nijjar, a Canadian citizen born in India, was a prominent supporter of the Khalistan movement, which seeks an independent Sikh homeland. India had declared him a wanted man before his death, while Canada maintained that there were credible allegations linking Indian agents to the assassination—claims New Delhi has consistently denied.
US officials described the operation as a major success in international cooperation, stressing that law enforcement agencies across North America, Europe, and Asia will continue working together to dismantle transnational criminal organisations.
