Unknown Gunmen Kill Iranian Sunni Cleric in Sistan-Baluchistan

A prominent Sunni Islamic cleric, Molavi Mohammad Anvar Rigi, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Monday in the southeastern Iranian border town of Mirjaveh, according to Iranian state media.

Rigi served as the Friday prayer leader in Mirjaveh, located in Sistan-Baluchistan Province, a region bordering Pakistan that has experienced years of unrest involving militant groups and clashes with security forces.

Local authorities said investigations into the killing are underway. Officials urged residents to remain calm, describing the attack as an attempt to undermine security and fuel sectarian tensions in the province.

Sistan-Baluchistan is one of Iran's poorest provinces and is home to a large Sunni Baluch population. The region has frequently witnessed attacks by Islamist and ethnic militant groups targeting security personnel and individuals associated with the Iranian government.

Authorities have not identified the attackers or announced any arrests as the investigation continues.
