The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has launched consultations with government officials and development partners in Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states to develop the Nigeria/UNICEF Country Programme for 2028–2032.
Speaking during the consultation in Kano, the Chief of UNICEF's Kano Field Office, Shafeeq Ur-Rehman, said the new programme would focus on addressing major challenges affecting children, including climate change, insecurity, rapid urbanisation and poverty.
He explained that the initiative would be government-led, evidence-based and designed to strengthen key sectors such as education, healthcare, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), child protection and social protection.
Ur-Rehman said the consultations aim to identify the most pressing child rights challenges in the three states and develop practical, sustainable solutions over the next five years. He also commended the state governments for their continued commitment to improving the welfare of children.
Representing the Kano State Government, Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Budget and Planning, Abdulmumini Ajumawa, praised UNICEF for its long-standing partnership in supporting health, education, nutrition, child protection, social policy and emergency response programmes.
He noted that despite progress recorded in several development indicators, the North-West region still faces significant challenges, including child malnutrition, poor access to quality healthcare, learning poverty, inadequate water and sanitation services, climate-related risks and socio-economic inequalities.
Ajumawa called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, urging participants to propose innovative and sustainable solutions that align with government priorities and strengthen institutional capacity across the region.
