Northern China on High Alert as Typhoon Bavi Triggers Mass Evacuations, Flood Warnings

Authorities across northern China have intensified emergency preparations as Typhoon Bavi approaches the country's eastern coast, bringing widespread heavy rainfall and raising fears of severe flooding.

The powerful storm is expected to make landfall near the eastern city of Wenzhou late Saturday or early Sunday. Meteorologists say Bavi could become one of the strongest typhoons to strike China in recent years.

Although the typhoon is forecast to hit eastern China, its moisture is expected to spread far inland, prompting heavy rain alerts in Beijing, Hebei, Shaanxi, Liaoning and other northern regions.

In Beijing, nearly 100,000 residents had been evacuated by Friday as authorities moved to reduce the risk of flooding. Public parks, tourist attractions and other outdoor facilities have been closed in several areas, including Beijing, Hebei and Inner Mongolia.

Officials have also increased water releases from Beijing's Miyun Reservoir to create additional capacity for flood control, while schools and tutoring centres in parts of northeastern China, including Fushun, have been ordered to remain closed.

Emergency services remain on high alert as local governments urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and follow weather advisories until the storm passes.
