The United Arab Emirates has announced a $30 million emergency humanitarian assistance package to support civilians affected by the worsening conflict in El Obeid, North Kordofan, Sudan.
The funding, approved by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will be distributed through the UAE Aid Agency to provide food, healthcare, clean drinking water, shelter and other essential relief to people displaced by the violence.
In a statement, the UAE said the intervention was prompted by the deteriorating humanitarian situation in El Obeid and surrounding communities, where thousands of civilians are facing severe shortages of basic necessities.
The government also called on the international community to strengthen efforts to protect civilians and ensure safe, rapid and unrestricted humanitarian access across Sudan. It urged all parties involved in the conflict to respect international humanitarian law by avoiding attacks on populated areas and allowing aid agencies to operate freely.
UAE Minister of State and member of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, Sheikh Shakhboot Al Nahyan, said the country's humanitarian response reflects its commitment to placing people's welfare above all else.
He stressed the importance of protecting civilians, creating safe humanitarian corridors and providing urgent assistance to displaced people, especially children, women, the elderly and the sick.
Shakhboot reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to working with humanitarian organisations and international partners to reduce civilian suffering and strengthen relief operations. He also warned against politicising humanitarian aid, saying the priority should remain saving lives and ensuring accountability for violations of international humanitarian law.
According to the UAE government, the country has provided nearly $800 million in humanitarian assistance to Sudan since the conflict began, supporting refugees, internally displaced persons and conflict-affected communities.
Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, Dr. Tareq Al Ameri, said the latest assistance forms part of the UAE's commitments to United Nations-led humanitarian response plans. The aid will be distributed through the UN and its humanitarian partners in Sudan and neighbouring countries hosting displaced people.
The UAE also reiterated that the Sudan crisis cannot be resolved through military action alone, calling for renewed support for a civilian-led political process aimed at restoring peace, preserving Sudan's unity and improving the lives of its citizens.
