Two Suspected Kidnappers Killed in Gun Battle with Police in Ondo

Two suspected kidnappers have been killed during a gun battle with police operatives along the Akure–Owo Expressway in Ondo State.

According to the Ondo State Police Command, the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday after officers attached to the Federal Highway Patrol Unit in Ilu-Abo responded to a distress call reporting the presence of armed men at a block industry near Ilu-Abo High School.

Police spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh said a group of about seven masked gunmen had stormed the premises and demanded to see the owner before officers arrived at the scene.

A fierce exchange of gunfire followed, during which two of the suspected kidnappers were fatally shot. The remaining members of the gang reportedly escaped into nearby bushes with suspected gunshot wounds.

Security operatives recovered a locally made pistol, live cartridges, four mobile phones, face masks, and two ATM cards believed to belong to the suspects or their victims.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital in Akure, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department's Anti-Kidnapping Squad for further investigation.

Police said efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and urged hospitals and members of the public to report anyone seeking treatment for gunshot injuries or displaying suspicious behaviour.

The Ondo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to combating kidnapping and other violent crimes through intelligence-led operations and appealed for continued public cooperation in providing timely information.
