United States President Donald Trump has declared that Washington intends to assume control of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the US would act as the "guardian" of the strategic waterway and should be financially compensated for protecting it.
Speaking during a phone interview with Fox News, Trump said the US would ensure security in the strait, adding that wealthy allied nations should pay for the protection provided by American forces.
His comments come as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate following renewed military strikes and retaliatory attacks across the Gulf region.
In response, Iran's armed forces warned that they would not allow the United States to interfere in the management of the Strait of Hormuz. Military spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari said any country providing logistical support to US forces would be regarded as participating in aggression against Iran's sovereignty and national security.
Meanwhile, Trump accused Iran of violating an interim agreement and threatened stronger military action, saying Tehran had repeatedly broken previous deals with Washington.
The crisis has also drawn international concern. Germany, France and the United Kingdom jointly condemned Iran's reported attacks on commercial shipping and Gulf countries, calling for an immediate restoration of the ceasefire and the resumption of diplomatic negotiations.
Maritime security analysts say commercial shipping patterns in the Strait of Hormuz have changed significantly, with many vessels choosing routes coordinated with Iran while only a few continue to use the US-backed southern passage.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most strategically important waterways, handling a significant share of global oil and gas exports.
The renewed confrontation has heightened fears of wider regional instability and further disruptions to global energy supplies.
