Sixty-one inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kurmawa, Kano State, have successfully completed the memorisation of the Holy Qur'an as part of a rehabilitation programme organised by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The graduating group consisted of 55 male and six female inmates. According to the Kano State Command spokesperson, CSC Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nasarawa, many of the participants had little or no prior knowledge of the Qur'an before entering the correctional facility. Through dedication, discipline and structured Islamic instruction, they were able to memorise the entire Holy Qur'an.
He described the achievement as a reflection of the positive impact of faith-based rehabilitation programmes and the NCoS' commitment to reforming, rehabilitating and reintegrating inmates into society in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.
To mark the occasion, the Nigerian Correctional Service, in partnership with a non-governmental organisation, presented each graduate with welfare packages, including new clothing, mattresses, blankets and financial assistance to support their reintegration after release.
The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, praised the leadership of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, for promoting educational, vocational and moral development initiatives across custodial centres nationwide.
Education expert Professor Aliyu Harun commended the programme, saying it would help transform inmates into responsible and law-abiding citizens. The Chairperson of the Kano State Prerogative of Mercy Committee, Hajiya Azumi Namadi Bebeji, also reaffirmed the state government's commitment to improving inmates' welfare and thanked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for supporting correctional centres in the state.
During the graduation ceremony, the custodial chaplain, DSC Mohd Alkanawy, and the Chief Imam, Imam Nasiru Abdu, encouraged the graduates to uphold the discipline and moral values they acquired throughout the programme. Certificates were presented to the 61 inmates by the District Head of Kawaji and Dan Ruwatan Kano, Alhaji Ibrahim Ado Bayero.
