President Bola Tinubu has urged the Senate to expedite the passage of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, as part of his administration's efforts to strengthen the management and governance of public senior secondary education across Nigeria.
The request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Thursday's plenary session.
According to the President, the proposed amendment was approved by the Federal Executive Council on April 30, 2026, and has now been forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.
Tinubu explained that the bill is designed to enhance the effectiveness of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission by improving its legal framework, governance structure, and operational capacity.
He said the amendment aligns with his administration's commitment to building stronger educational institutions, improving learning outcomes, and supporting national development.
The President also appealed to lawmakers to grant the bill accelerated consideration to enable the reforms to take effect without delay.
Following the presentation of the request, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action. The committee is expected to report back to the Senate within one week.
If approved by the National Assembly and signed into law, the amendment is expected to strengthen the commission's role in coordinating public senior secondary education, supporting states through policy implementation, funding interventions, quality assurance, and raising educational standards nationwide.
