Russia has pledged to continue providing military assistance to the governments of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, reinforcing its growing partnership with the three West African nations.
The commitment was announced in a joint statement after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with the foreign ministers of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) during a high-level meeting in Niamey, Niger.
According to the statement, Moscow will continue supporting efforts to strengthen the operational capabilities of the armed forces of the three countries as they battle armed extremist groups across the Sahel region.
Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger are all governed by military administrations that came to power through coups between 2020 and 2023. Since then, the three nations have distanced themselves from former colonial power France and expanded their diplomatic and security cooperation with Russia.
Russia has provided military support through its Africa Corps while also seeking to deepen economic cooperation with the AES countries, particularly in the energy and mining sectors.
The latest meeting builds on earlier discussions held in Moscow in April 2025 and reflects the growing strategic partnership between Russia and the Alliance of Sahel States.
