Pakistan has called on the United States and Iran to exercise maximum restraint following the collapse of a nearly three-week ceasefire and the resumption of hostilities, warning that renewed fighting serves no one's interests.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged both nations to uphold the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) brokered in Islamabad earlier this year, describing the agreement as a key foundation for regional peace, mutual respect, and stability. The ministry also reaffirmed Pakistan's readiness to continue mediating efforts aimed at reducing tensions.
The appeal came after the United States launched a second consecutive night of strikes on Iranian military targets, reportedly hitting dozens of sites, including missile storage facilities, radar installations, and naval assets.
Iran responded by launching drones and missiles targeting US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, while also sending drones toward a military site in Qatar. Iranian state media reported casualties among its military personnel following the latest attacks.
The renewed escalation follows recent Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Washington to restore sanctions on Iranian oil exports and declare the previous ceasefire effectively over.
Several regional leaders have also called for calm. Qatar urged both sides to return to diplomacy, while Egypt emphasized the need for restraint to preserve regional peace. Kuwait condemned the attacks on its territory as a violation of its sovereignty, and the Gulf Cooperation Council warned that the latest violence threatens efforts to maintain stability across the Gulf.
Analysts say Pakistan's role as a mediator remains significant but caution that lasting peace will depend on both Washington and Tehran demonstrating greater flexibility and commitment to dialogue.
