Tinubu Approves Conversion of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa to Specialised University

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, as part of efforts to strengthen technical education and develop Nigeria's solid minerals sector.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the Presidency, the new institution will provide specialised education, research and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing and other emerging technologies.

The approval followed a proposal by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District. The senator argued that the state’s abundant solid mineral resources make it an ideal location for a university dedicated to mining and engineering.

The Federal Government said the university is expected to produce highly skilled graduates, promote technological innovation and support the sustainable development of Nigeria’s mining industry. It is also expected to reduce dependence on foreign technical expertise while creating opportunities for industrial growth.

President Tinubu directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other relevant agencies to begin the legal and administrative processes required to implement the transition.

The Presidency said the conversion aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises education, human capital development, economic diversification and job creation through specialised higher education. The government added that the new university will help position Nasarawa State as a leading centre for mining and engineering education in Nigeria.
