The Federal Government has suspended the proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), following widespread public concern.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Federal Ministry of Education, the government announced that it had withdrawn its June 18, 2026, notice on the proposed fee adjustment pending extensive consultations with key stakeholders.
According to the ministry, the proposed increase was driven by rising costs associated with conducting national examinations, including logistics, security, printing, technology deployment, and quality assurance.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be suspended to allow for a broader review process in line with the Federal Government's commitment to transparent and inclusive policymaking.
The ministry said it would engage examination bodies, state ministries of education, school owners, parents, labour unions, and other stakeholders before making any final decision.
It stressed that no increase in WAEC or NECO registration fees would take effect until the consultation process is completed and a final policy is approved.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring affordable access to quality education while balancing the financial demands of conducting credible public examinations. It also thanked parents, students, and other stakeholders for their patience and support during the review process.
