Zamfara Governor Unveils $200 Million Lithium Mining and Processing Plant

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has inaugurated a $200 million lithium mining and processing plant in Boko Village, Zurmi Local Government Area, describing the project as a major step toward responsible mining, industrial growth, and economic diversification in the state.

Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Lawal said the investment marks a significant milestone in Zamfara's efforts to harness its vast mineral resources through responsible investment, local value addition, job creation, and sustainable development.

He stated that his administration is committed to transforming the solid minerals sector from largely informal and unregulated activities into a transparent, organized, and value-driven industry that will directly benefit the people of Zamfara State.

The governor noted that global demand for lithium and other critical minerals continues to rise due to their importance in renewable energy, electric vehicles, and modern technology. He stressed that Zamfara should not remain only a supplier of raw minerals but should become a key player in the entire mining value chain through local processing, industrialization, and skills development.

Lawal commended the companies behind the project and other development partners for investing in Zamfara, saying their confidence reflects the state's readiness for legitimate business and responsible partnerships.

He assured investors of continued government support through improved infrastructure, stronger collaboration, and policies that encourage sustainable investment.

The governor also emphasized the need for host communities to benefit from the project through employment opportunities, skills acquisition, community development initiatives, environmental protection, and meaningful corporate social responsibility programmes.

Governor Lawal further acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's commitment to repositioning Nigeria's solid minerals sector as a key driver of economic diversification, economic growth, and national development.
